- Andre Agassi burst onto
- the tennis scene in 1986
- with long bleached-blond
- hair and flashy clothes.
- He became famous right
- away, but not for being a great tennis player.
- Lately, Andre has concentrated more on his
- game than his image, and that hard work has
- paid off. In 1995, he passed Pete Sampras to
- become the number 1-ranked player in the
- world.
-
- Andre started playing tennis at a young age.
- His father Mike, a former Olympic boxer, was
- determined to have a tennis star in the family.
-
- When Andre was just a baby, his father
- hung a tennis ball over his crib to
- develop his eye movement. When
- Andre could sit in a high
- chair, Mr. Agassi would
- stick a Ping-Pong paddle
- in his hand and toss him
- a balloon partly filled with
- water. By the age of five, Andre had
- ΓÇ£practicedΓÇ¥ with tennis greats Jimmy Connors
- and Bjorn Bjorg.
-
- When Andre was 13, Mr. Agassi enrolled him
- in the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, in
- Bradenton, Florida. Many young tennis
- players who wanted to go into the pros would
- develop and train there. By 1986, at the age
- of 16, Andre decided to turn pro.
-
- Unlike other players, who wore white
- shorts, Andre dressed in colorful shirts
- with stone-washed denim shorts.
- Sometimes he would
- blow kisses at the crowd
- or throw his shorts and
- shirts to spectators after
- victories. His stunts on
- the courts, as well as his television
- commercials, got him noticed right away.
-
- But AndreΓÇÖs play was not as cool as his look.
- After a promising start in 1986, he slumped
- badly. He got so upset about losing, he even
- thought of quitting tennis. Then, in 1987, he
- won his first tour title, and by yearΓÇÖs end had
- jumped from number 91 to number 25 in the
- world tennis rankings.
-
- In 1988, Andre won six tournaments and
- reached the finals in a seventh, lifting
- him to a number 4 ranking. Andre was
- only 18 years old -- the
- youngest male pro ever
- to hold that position! By
- October, he was number
- 3 in the world.
-
- But in 1989 his game went into a slump
- again, and Andre slipped to number 7. In
- 1990, he won the IBM/ATP Tour World
- Championship, reached the finals of the
- French Open, and bounced back to number
- 4. Still, his career had been filled with ups and
- downs and he had yet to win even one of the
- sportΓÇÖs four biggest tournaments: the Grand
- Slam events (Wimbledon, and the Australian,
- French, and U.S. Opens). In 1991, he
- reached the finals of the French Open
- again, but suffered a disappointing
- loss after leading two sets to one. In
- 1992, Andre captured
- Wimbledon, to win his
- first Grand Slam title. But
- in 1993, a wrist injury
- limited Andre to playing
- just 13 tournaments. He slid down to number
- 24 in the rankings and his longtime coach
- Nick Bollettieri quit.
-
- It was then that Andre decided to make some
- changes in his life. In 1994 he hired a new
- coach and worked his way back to the top.
- He stopped eating junk food and spent more
- time working out at the gym. He focused on
- doing the things he needed to do to prepare
- for tournaments.
-
- It seemed that AndreΓÇÖs new attitude was
- on the right track. He captured his
- second Grand Slam
- event by winning the
- 1994 U.S. Open. He beat
- every player in the Top
- 10 in 1994 and zoomed
- to number 2 in the rankings. He became the
- first player ever to move from outside the Top
- 20 to the number 2 slot in the same year.
-
- But that was just the beginning of AndreΓÇÖs
- makeover. Coming into 1995, he cut his long
- ponytail and now sports a buzzed haircut. He
- added his third Grand Slam championship by
- winning the Australian Open in January, and
- in April moved past Pete Sampras to become
- the number 1 male player in the world.
